USA Gets Draw Against Disjointed England
USA open their World Cup campaign with a hard fought draw against England
Although rocked back by and early Steven Gerrard goal in the 4th minute the Americans grew in confidence An early yellow card issued to James Milner of England unsettled the English and they quickly brought Shaun Wright-Phillips on as a substitute.
England continued to be disjointed with USA gaining confidence as the first half wore on. Then in the 40th minute, almost against the run of play, striker Clint Dempsey tried a speculative shot from distance which England keeper Robert Green allowed to squirm past him.
The States were delirious and finished the first half on a high.
England made their second change during the break bringing on utility defender Jamie Carragher for Ledley King.
The second half was an engrossing game with England marginally in the ascendancy but playing really poorly for them. Going forward into the penalty area they created some alarms for American center backs Demerit and Onyewu but both continued to stem the English tide. Onyewu was having an extraordinary match given this was his first competitive game since August.
For England’s part they continued to look disjointed and out of sorts and although they had some good goal attempts from Rooney, Johnson and Heskey as the half wore on it became obvious they were settling for a draw
For the Americans this was a very good opening performance and gives them a real chance of reaching the knock-out stages.
For England the jury must still be out. From the position that England are considered to be one of the favorites and a certainty for at least the quarter final stage this performance was poor , lacking in confidence and conviction. Their manager Fabio Capello has a lot of work to do!
