England’s Fans Frustrated By Injury Situation
After the stuttering opening against the USA on Saturday frustration with England’s preparations continue to provide discussion among England’s fans.
Coming into the Tournament David Beckham’s achilles injury was a known problem but the withdrawal on the eve of the games by Captain Rio Ferdinand was a real and unseen blow.
Bringing midfielder Gareth Barry along even though he was known to be injured was a calculated risk which seems to be paying off but niggles surrounding Rooney and Ashley Cole provide issues that Manager Capello could do without.
However problem surrounding Ledley King do provide for further examination. King has known knee issues which have threatened his career for many seasons but Tottenham have nursed him back to his best in recent months. His form over the final weeks of the season was stunning.
On the weekend the Tottenham skipper only lasted 45 minutes before being replaced by Jamie Carragher of Liverpool. What is surprising though is that it is reported that King sustained his groin strain in the fourth minute.
Given his long standing issues with knee injuries it would have been thought that he would have his own strenuous and dedicated warm-up regime so as not to inflame the knees going into a game. How then can a seasoned pro tear his groin in four minutes? As a defender you expect in the first ten minutes to be put under pressure so you do not have the luxury of getting warm slowly in the first few minutes of the match. You must be ready for immediate action.
Ledley King is likely to be out for three weeks and miss at least three games, if England make it that far. It will be interesting to see whether any further details surface regarding his injury over the coming weeks.
